Kavya’s love turns out to be a ghost!

By: Tushar Joshi

SPIRITUAL QUEST: Eijaz Khan and Natassha
Those who follow the tumultuous journey of Kavya (Eijaz Khan) in Kavyanjali (Star Plus) will be in for a shock when it is revealed that his first love, Anjum (Natassha) is not a live person, but a ghost!

The last few episodes have seen Kavya harrowed by a past that keeps coming back. Despite his closeness to Anjali (also played by Natassha), he is constantly haunted by visions of Anjum.

Says Kripa Narayanan, creative head for the show, “Kavya is on the verge of a nervous breakdown and is taking time coming to terms with his past. When he finds out that his first love was a ghost, it almost kills him. Also, with the track veering towards the paranormal, there is lots of thrill to the story.”

Anjali is frustrated that Kavya doesn’t love her and is stuck in his past. He even skips their honeymoon in London and takes her to Shimla, to figure out Anjum’s past.

“After revealing Anjum’s identity, the show traces the reason why she is haunting Kavya. The coming week marks an important twist to the tale, when Kavya discovers an old photo of Nitya (Amrita Singh) and Anjum’s mother.

This leads him to discover that a marriage had been fixed between Anjum and himself by his and Anjum’s parents. However, it was called off, driving Anjum into depression and leading to her death due to an accident,” explains Narayan.

But will these added elements of ghost and spirits shift the focus from the romantic angle the show is based on? “Not really. In fact Anjali and Kavya have grown fond of each other.

But whenever he tries to get intimate with her, he gets visions of Anjum. The romance will be dashed with flavours of mystery and suspense,” says the creative head.

With the programme heading towards darker themes, will there be any space for light moments and humour? “We have the holi celebrations, when Anjali is finally accepted in the family. We are trying not to keep the theme dark throughout.”

Crossover girl

She’s a crossover girl in the true sense of the word. Natasha who is the Anjali in Kkavyanjali has been unobtrusively notching up success both on the small and big screens.

The model-turned-star is on a rollercoaster ride ever since she played the lead in Kabhie Souten Kabhie Saheli on Star Plus. So impressed was Ekta Kapoor that she signed her on for Kuch To Hai and Krishna Cottage. And though both films turned out to be box office duds, Natasha’s star has been shining bright.

Besides her teleserial Kkavyanjali, she has more than half a dozen films lined up for the year, including Vashu Bhagnani’s Silsiley, Tariq Anwar’s Ek Se Bure Do, Balaji’s Koi Aap Sa and a Tamil film Sukran.

More than films, it’s the variety of roles that is making Bollywood take note. In Silsiley, she plays a bare-dare girl, in Ek Se Bure Do she does a comic cameo opposite Arshad Warsi and in Koi Aap Sa she pairs up with Aftab Shivdasani for a love story.

According to Natasha, “Being a successful model gave me a tremendous high. But what excites me is the variety of roles.” A role model, no doubt.

Rock ‘n’ roll: Ali Azmat from Junoon with the Kkavyanjali cast
Tonight Kkavyanjali, (Star plus) invites a guest from a music band across the border, and also ropes in a fellow actor to play an important role on the show.

Ali Azmat, of the popular Sufi rock band Junoon plays a celebrity chief guest at Anjali’s (Natassha) painting exhibition.

Says Azmat, “I had great fun being on the show. I actually have a friend who requested me to be a part of the serial.” Azmat, who has been traveling across the world for the last few months, doesn’t watch any soaps.

“Television is the last thing I would put on. I have been travelling around the world for some time now. I haven’t watched a single episode of Kkavyanjali, but know that the show is quite popular in Pakistan.”

Bad boy turns good:
Shabbir Ahluwalia makes an entry in Kkavyanjali as Vansh
However, he will make sure he watches tonight’s episode. “Yes I will try to turn on a television set if I am around one tonight.”

Describing his experience of meeting Amrita Singh, he says, “Amrita is a sweet person. She is very down to earth and constantly keeps cracking jokes on the set.

Even though the cast was shooting till four in the morning, they had high spirits and tremendous professionalism.”

Tonight’s episode also marks the entry of Shabbir Ahluwalia, who plays the cunning yet adorable Rishi in Kahiin To Hoga (Star Plus).

“I play Vansh, a middle class guy who enters Anjali’s life. My role on the show is completely opposite to what I play in Kahiin To Hoga. Vansh is a very positive role unlike Rishi who has shades of grey in him. I am Anjali’s fiancé in the serial.”

Commenting on the look he says, “It’s not a very glamorous look. I am clean-shaven like a normal, average guy. Since the character is shown as someone who’s not too suave and well to do, I am shown wearing trousers and plain shirts.”
