She started her career as a marketing executive for a mobilephone company, but destiny had different plans for her. ‘‘Somebody at the office once told me I had a nice face and I should try modelling,’’ recounts Natassha. Getting into this industry wasn’t planned —it just happened. But, I’m glad.’’

The actress who has been all over the small screen for the past few weeks, thanks to her show Kkavyanjali , started modelling around five years ago. She did her first television show, Kabhi Sauten Kabhie Saheli around that time. Lady luck smiled on Natassha and soon she bagged a lead role in Kucch Toh Hai . She also went down south and did a number of movies there. Natassha’s return to the small screen today in no way means it’s the end of her film career, she clarifies. ‘‘I took up this show because it’s a brilliant role. Besides, I have three Hindi films that will be releasing this year, apart from south Indian movies.’’
Natassha doesn’t look at TV as a comedown. ‘‘I started from here. How can I look at it as a step down? I’m just looking to balance both films and this show,’’ she says. With her traditional Indian looks, where does she see herself in this ‘got it, flaunt it’ era? ‘‘I have done numbers like Ding Dong and Bindaas which were appreciated,’’ comes the reply, ‘‘I’m comfortable doing these numbers. I can give it my best shot. It finally depends on the audience and how viewers accept it.’’
But this girl has certain limits set for herself which she won’t cross. ‘‘I don’t think I’ll kiss on screen. I’m not comfortable with the idea and so I wouldn’t do it. Life is hectic and there is little time for anything else. I’ve had boyfriends in the past. But, I’m not seeing anyone right now.’’
It’s just work and this workaholic enjoys every bit of it. ‘‘There was a time a few years ago when I worked for 72 hours at a stretch. I didn’t mind that at all,’’ says Natassha. In fact, between chilling out at home and working like a maniac, she would prefer the latter. ‘‘That’s how I am. I love acting and that can never tire me.’’

Is he insecure about the show’s ratings and the pressure of living up to people’s expectations?

Were you ever afraid of taking up Kkavyanjali?
No, I was never afraid. In fact, I was highly excited when I was offered the role. Who would not want to be the lead of one of television’s biggest shows? The prospect of playing Kkavya was challenging and exciting. Till then, I had only done supporting leads. I knew Kkavyanjali would be unlike any of them.

But when you joined the show, its ratings were low. Weren’t you apprehensive?
I knew the ratings weren’t great when I joined, but I had already made up my mind to play Kkavya and go to any extent to make things work for the show. Today, after a few months of settling in, the ratings are showing a steady increase. 

Is it true you literally live on the sets?
It’s not that dramatic! But yes, it’s true that we work round the clock. Ekta (Kapoor) made it very clear to me that I should be available for her 24×7 and it would be the same from her end. I like her honesty and approach towards work.

Some time back, it was a bit difficult because I had to adjust to the working conditions. I looked tired and lost some weight. But I’m sure things will improve gradually. I believe there is no use whining because if you are in it, you might as well give it your best shot.

Is it true that you and co-star Natassha have been sharing the same trailer and are more than just friends?
I don’t know who told you about the trailer, but we are just good friends. I share an amazing chemistry with her, off-screen and on-screen as well. She’s a sweetheart and one of the best people I have worked with. If people read too much into our bonding then I can’t help it. I wouldn’t want to deny or accept anything.

How do you react when people say that the show has flopped?
I find it very sad. I have more confidence in this show than anything. Everyone, from the spot boy to the camera man to the artists, has given their all to Kkavyanjali.

When there’s so much positivity and hard work, there will definitely be light at the end of the tunnel. Even I have moved my residence closer to the sets to avoid delays. The show has been picking up, and I’m confident it will do well eventually.

Two reasons to party!

SOME of television’s biggest names got together the other day to celebrate their success, but it was a double occasion — it being Jeetendra’s birthday as well! Seen partying hard were Smriti Iraani, Hiten Tejwani, Gauri Pradhan, Sudha Shivpuri, Apara Mehta, Apurva Agnihotri,
Shilpa Saklani, Swetta Keswani, Rakshanda Khan and Sumeet Sachdev. Ekta Kapoor looked fabulous in a brown outfit while Jeetendra’s wife Shobha Kapoor also joined in the fun.
Also present were Natassha, Mahesh Thakur, Rakesh Paul, Sakshi Tanwar, Kiran Karmarkar, Shashikala and Narayani Shastri among others. What really caught everyone’s attention was to see the sari-clad bahus letting their hair down and shaking a leg on the dance floor. Great music, food and drinks kept spirits high.
