Eijaz, Iqbal, the sexiest on TV: Anita
Anita Hasnandani aka Anjali of ‘Kkavyanjali’ was recently in the news when her co-star Eijaz confessed his love for her in a Mumbai daily. Known in the industry as Ekta Kapoor’s friend and confidante, Anita comes across as a giggly teenager as opposed to her on-screen image of a mature girl. She also happens to be a big star down south and has graced the Bollywood screen opposite Tusshar Kapoor in ‘Krishna Cottage’. We visited her on the sets of her serial and she shared her likes and dislikes with us in a candid chat.
Serials or films
Serials, anyday. Keeps you busy and gives you a certain amount of security. It also offers great TRP ratings and great money. I am working every day. After ‘Krishna Cottage’, I didn’t work for one and a half years. That was the most depressing phase of my life. I didn’t get any good films and I didn’t want to do any crappy ones. Since the day ‘Kkavyanjali’ happened till now, I haven’t been more confident, happier and more secure in life.
Generation leap; yes or no
No, I will never do it as I don’t relate to it. One year is fine but 20 years and graying will be too much to handle.
Balaji camp Vs other banners
I am a very content person. I am happy where I am. I have achieved a lot and God has been kind to me. For South Indian movies, I divide my time between serials and films. I just finished a Kannada film which is releasing in August.
Missing Eijaz?
I am still shooting flashes with him. (laughs).
Being linked to Eijaz
He is a very sweet guy and we are great friends, but that is just about it. There is nothing more and trust me if it ever happens I won’t hesitate to admit it. There is nothing wrong with being in a relationship.
His confession
I think the whole issue was blown out of proportion. He didn’t say all of that. He must have said he is fond of me. As a friend even I am fond of him. We share a certain kind of personal rapport to believe what is written in the press. They do misquote and we know that. We are comfortable working together and there is no awkwardness. We are friends.

Balaji Telefilms has this incredible capacity of turning an obscure serial into a mega hit. Unfortunately, the reverse has also been proved true with Kavyanjali.
One of the biggest launches of 2004, the serial made big news by being the comeback vehicle of Amrita Singh, Vidya Sinha and Natassha — who, by the way, has reverted to her original name, Anita Hasnandani.
Unfortunately, the television ratings did not provide much support to the serial initially. The death of the male protagonist Eijaaz Khan (Kkavya) made things worse. But with the entry of Iqbal Khan as Shourya and a change in the storyline, the serial has made up for lost ground and is on the road to recovery.
The set — Nanda House, built in Klix and Nixon studios in Mumbai — is abuzz with activity for the day’s shooting. Posh glass, steel interiors and a plush sofa greet you the moment you enter the living room of the sets. The shooting schedule for the day had been postponed to 2:30 pm for a media meet.
The first to arrive was Anita Hasnandani. So why did she change her name? Dressed in a light pink sari with a violet border, Anita replies instantly, “My real name is Anita. In all the 13 films I have done down South, I have been credited as Anita. And most of them were hits. When I started in Bollywood, I felt I needed a new identity; so I changed my name to Natassha. But after a few years and discussions with Shobha Aunty (Kapoor) and Ekta, I decided to go back to my original name.”
Quiz her on Kavyanjali, and the actress adjusts her hair before answering, “It’s been a year since Kavya’s death. Anjali (Anita’s name in the serial) has become a stronger person. She is performing Kavya’s duties in the family and is looking after the family business as well. It’s the perfect match of a modern woman, who is also traditional.”
Is she enjoying the small screen after her brief affair with the big screen? Anita, who has done films like Yeh Dil, Krishna Cottage and Koi Aap Sa, answers, “Of course. It has been an extremely enriching experience working for this serial. Right from day one, I have enjoyed the atmosphere and the role that I have been playing. Working in a Balaji production is a family affair. Shobha Aunty is like my mom and Jeetu Uncle like my dad. When Ekta decides on a role for me, I don’t question her. Because I know she will not cast me in anything that does not suit me.”
Iqbal Khan joined Anita on a chair next to the sofa soon. Sporting a grey suit and a designer stubble, Khan was looking the handsome young man he is. “I am just 20-episodes old in this serial. Currently it is a very slow and gentle climb for my character, but I know that moving forward it will be a steep and fast climb. I am happy that I came into the serial after Kavya’s death!”
Ask Iqbal why he says, “The Indian audience wouldn’t have taken much time to blame me for his death! And I don’t want my character to have negative shades.”
He plays a charmer who is fun loving and nice, but who, when it comes to business, is ruthless.
After Iqbal, it is time to meet our good old Kitty from Karamchand. Susmita Mukherjee, who plays Romilla in Kavyanjali, is looking her usual funny self in a bright red salwar kameez. Even after more than two decades of Karamchand, the first questions to be directed her is about the old detective serial. “That was a legend. We used to solve such complex problems so simply on screen that the audience could relate to it. I don’t think there is any crime serial that has even come close to Karamchand,” she says.
Vidya Sinha (Dida), Rajeev Paul (due to enter the serial in a negative role) and the other artistes are all moving around the large living room, preparing for the shots. But with the media around, the overall mood is of relaxation.
Sandeep Baswana (better known as the current Sahil in Kyun Ki…) is smoking in the backdrop. He plays Shlok in Kavyanjali. He joined the show in September last year after taking a one-and-half year break. “I was very tired after working constantly for three-and-a-half years. I needed a break desperately and that is what I took,” says the Haryanvi actor.
and Anita?
was only a name that Balaji Telefilms had given me. But after all Anita was something my parents called me. It was, and will always remain my original identity. And by the way I was never comfortable with Natassha
– I couldn’t relate to that name…
Ever wondered whether TV soap stars ever watch their own shows? Or, while they choose to be part of saas-bahu dramas, they like the serials themselves?
We put these questions to Anita Hasnandani, earlier known as Natasha, who plays the lead in Ekta Kapoor’s Kkavyanjali. When asked about the top three TV shows she would hate to miss, this is what Anita picked:
Kasamh Se
This is truly different from the other Balaji serials currently on air. The storyline is so unique that it leaves a mark. It?s about three sisters who have been brought up together, how they fall in love, how their lives are shattered and how they strike back — it is wonderful and inspiring. The script, performances and handling are all above average.
Kasauti Zindagi Kay
Apart from the legendary Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, few other serials have been running for so long while doing so well consistently.
One nice thing about Kasauti… is that all characters in the serial are very strong. Be it the protagonists or antagonists, every character stands on firm ground. I suppose that?s why it does well even after so many years.
Orange County
This American soap is a typical mushy teenage love story. I believe nothing can match the universal appeal that love stories have for the youth. Anyone from a younger generation will like this serial, the presentation is so unique. It has some very good music as well.

Anita Hasanandani, better known as Natassha, recently made headlines when news of her supposed affair with co-star Eijaz Khan was splashed in a local Mumbai tabloid, but the media shy actress chooses to keep a dignified silence on most of what has been written about her.
Anita opens up to Tellychakkar.com’s Riya V Anandwala about Ekta, working with Balaji and yes, her love life!

“Ekta is my best friend!”- Anita |
You had had a fall out with Ekta Kapoor, what happened exactly?
Well, I was shooting continuously for hours together, and she wanted me to go to some place for Koi Aap Sa’s promotion. I said I can’t, because if these people won’t leave me early, how does anyone expect me to reach at any place on time. So she blasted me off, thinking that I didn’t want to promote our film. But this bitterness lasted only for two days, and anyway Shobha aunty was on my side!
What kind of a relationship you share with Ekta? Is she just a producer or a friend too?
She has been my best friend for a very long time.
Since the day you entered the industry, you have been working with Balaji. Why didn’t you try any other production houses?
Well, Balaji, is now like a family for me, I am extremely comfortable working with them. Besides, for Kavyanjali I work all 30 days month, so no time for anything else. And if ever I get time, I concentrate on my South Indian films.

” I am not a hardcore believer in numerology and astrology”- Anita |
So you agree that there is more than Balaji in this industry?
Of course there is, some really good production houses are doing a great job. And if I get a genre which I have never worked on, I will surely give it a try.
Apart from Kavyanjali, did you ever feel like working for any other Balaji soaps?
No, I never got that feeling; I am really happy what I am doing right now. And I am very sure Ekta will have something good to offer once I am done with Kavyanjali!
So you are in touch with South Indian films?
Yes, certainly! My new movie, which is a Kannada flick, will be releasing very soon, and I am quite excited about it.
There was news that you and Eijaz were seeing each other…
I was out of town then and they didn’t have a confirmation from my side. Eijaz was misquoted! It was very upsetting when the media linked me to Eijaz!

“My first South Indian film was a superhit, and that time my name was Anita!”- Anita |
Every one is a little confused about your name, is it Natassha or Anita?
My name is Anita Hasanandani! For two years I had changed my name to Natassha, as I was asked to, by Balaji. But in these two years whenever I used to read my name anywhere, I used to get a very weird feeling, that it’s not my name. So finally I decided to get back to my original name.
So you got back to your original name, once you got fame?
No, it’s nothing like that! My first film in South was a super duper hit, and my name was Anita then.
How strong is your belief when it comes to astrology and numerology?
No, it’s not at all strong. But when they say that if you change your name or spell it in a different way, you will get fame, then I think what’s the harm in trying it. So I give it a shot!
Coming to your love life, tell us something about your love interest?
Well, I did have a boyfriend down south! But that is my past now. I will definitely settle down in three years from now, and will start the manhunt soon, (laughs)
Probably the best KavyAnjali sequence, superb acting by both Eijaz and Anita
