I am not really aware of the dress codes in colleges though, but I think it shouldn’t be that rigid. Students come to colleges to study as well as enjoy, and this makes their life very difficult. Also, I agree, there are some girls who take undue advantage of the freedom and wear revealing attire, so there should be a system with restrictions but not so rigid!

Ekta waits for Anita’s nod

Ekta Kapoor has been the lucky mascot for many in the industry. Under any normal circumstances, actors are known to hanker for roles in Balaji serials . So, this is perhaps the first time that Ekta has been asked to wait by one of her actors. She is none other than Ekta’s best friend, Natassha aka Anita Hassanandani, (who is currently busy winding up her show Kavyanjali). Last month, Anita declared her plans saying that she is going to take a break from television because she wanted to pursue her career in films down South. Even after making her intentions clear, Ekta did not close the door on Anita. “At present I’ve 10 fabulous scripts with me and Anita has the option  of taking her pick. But she said that she wants to take a break,” says Ekta.

The particular script that Ekta is referring to, will cast Anita and Amrita Singh in the lead. “During Kavyanjali, Amrita and Anita had become great friends. They share a mother-daughter chemistry that I want to capitalise on,” says Ekta.

Apparently, Anita and Amrita grew close during Kavyanjali. People on the sets of Kavyanjali often say that Anita was unhappy with Amrita’s character in the show being knocked off. “The show that I want to make with them is about a mother and daughter and their struggle to survive the hardships in life,” reveals Ekta. She also adds that, the show will be made only if Anita and Amrita consent.”

Surprisingly, Ekta is being patient. “They are apt for the characters and can’t be replaced,” Ekta says.

S Srikanth speaks with actress Natassha, now ‘Anita’, who has a line of prestigious projects lined up in the film industry down South.
She recently announced her change of screen name to the media. Though she is called Natassha in the North, she made her debut in Telugu cinema with the sensational hit Nuvvu Nenu as ‘Anita.’ She has put to rest all the confusion pertaining to her name and now wants to be called ‘Anita’ only. Says the pretty and petite Sindhi actress, “Anita is my real name and so I want to be called by my real name only.”

After her sensational debut in Nuvve Nenu, Anita followed it up with a few other Telugu films that were not as big as Nuvve Nenu. She went to act in a couple of Tamil films.

Anita has also acted in about five Hindi films including Kuch to Hai, Krishna Cottage and the most recent Koi Aap Sa that were produced by Balaji Telefilms. Anita did a small role in Khalid Mohammed’s film Silsilein that won her the nomination for the Stardust best supporting actress.

Anita owes her rising popularity as a television actress to Balaji Telefilms. She featured in the lead in her first teleserial Kabhi Souten Kabhi Saheli and has been a regular in Balaji’s teleserials. The ongoing daily soap Kavyanjali has topped the charts and has also won Anita the award for the best screen couple chemistry with her co-star.

Says she, “The kind of recognition that I am getting from Kavyanjali is unprecedented. I did not get this kind of following from any of the Hindi films that I worked in. Today, television has become as big as films and I believe that small screen has truly become big.”

Anita has wrapped up her third Kannada film recently with Gandugali Kumararama that hit the screens recently.

Her first two outings Veera Kannadiga (opposite Puneet) and Santosha did not exactly set the cash registers ringing. In this interview, Anita speaks about her career as an actress and herself. Excerpts:

Why did your film career fail to take off after your sensational debut in Nuvvu Nenu? Why did you choose to enter television?

I starting accepting television offers because I was not particularly game to exposing or doing kissing scenes on screen. I felt that they were not the right kind of roles for me.

I did Telugu films Sriram and Ninne Ishta Peddanu that did average business but was never able to match the stupendous success of Nuvvu Nenu.

The downslide started with the comedy film Thotti Gang that didn’t do well at the box-office.

What do you have to say about your role in Kavyanjali? Are you stuck with television now given its popularity? How is it to work with Amrita Singh in the serial?

I am very happy with my role in the serial.

I don’t want to say that I am stuck with television. I should do good work and as long as I am appreciated, I am unfazed about accepting television offers.

I am very comfortable working with Amrita Singh, as she is a very sweet woman.

How does it feel to come back to Kannada cinema?

It is really nice to work in a Kannada film.

Which are the other projects that you are currently working on?
